“What I learned this week” is a collection of articles related to online advertising, though in case of a slow news week, I might call it - What I learned in the last couple weeks. Let’s kick it off…

http://venturebeat.com/2013/04/22/facebook-home-over-a-week-later-only-500k-installs-with-a-two-star-user-rating/ - FB Home app downloads are off to a slow start. The article notes a miserable launch when Home’s downloads are compared to other high-profile apps. Could it be that Facebook is practicing what they preach… agile development and prototyping at the user’s expense? Who knows, four iterations from now we’ll all love it? Maybe it’s a slight confirmation of the reported drop-off in usage by the younger crowd? Whatever the reason reviews aren’t positive.

http://www.adexchanger.com/social-media/twitter-programmatic-strategy/ - It’s inevitable and we are paying close attention to see how Twitter (and for that matter, Pinterest and Tumblr) open up their inventory to RTB. Bonus: Our own COO adds his comments.

http://gizmodo.com/5994607/people-stream-netflix-more-than-they-watch-any-cable-network?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews – Just one data point but this trend is an important one to watch as television and viewing habits continue to morph into something gramps wouldn’t recognize.

http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/197708/facebook-publishers-make-inroads-on-mobile-ad-net.html?edition=58709#axzz2QB5uuox7 - The changing landscape of mobile ad delivery. “Networks, especially independent ones, are entering a difficult phase…” Agreed.

http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/198627/tumblr-launches-mobile-ads.html#axzz2RF5vMnYu - Tumblr starting mobile ads… Pinterest can’t be far behind. As mentioned above at some point these publishers may open their inventory to bidding. Lets call it Native Premiumatic – you heard it here first.

Welcome to Ask the Digital Media Expert. All questions are answered by Goodway Group’s COO Jay Friedman.

Have a burning digital media question? Send it to us at melissa@goodwaygroup.com

QUESTION:

What kinds of niche services are populating as a result of the growth of RTB on Ad Exchanges? RTB + Ad Exchanges = big business and lots of growth. What other companies will benefit from this growth and what kinds of niche campaign services will follow as a result of this success?

ANSWER:

Great question and foresight into the industry! This is probably Google’s biggest problem right now. It wants to build an end-to-end stack such that agencies (and advertisers directly) needn’t go anywhere else. But, new productive ideas that add real value to the business keep popping up and aren’t built into Google’s stack, and so agencies/advertisers are compiling their own. Appnexus, on the other hand (I have no relationship with them, by the way) has taken an opposite approach making everything modular in an “app” style environment so you can build your own.

Some examples of innovation within RTB include dynamic creative, viewability, verification, GRP measurement, look-a-like modeling, and even tag debugging software. Good luck in RTB land!

Welcome to Ask the Digital Media Expert. All questions are answered by Goodway Group’s COO Jay Friedman.

Have a burning digital media question? Send it to us at melissa@goodwaygroup.com

QUESTION:

We’re hearing a lot about how 2012 campaigns are harnessing the power of data analytics to serve messages online, retarget donors and supporters, and even discover which specific ads are most effective on audience perceptions. Do you foresee a time when this “big data” emphasis may eliminate traditional media altogether? Or will there always be a need for “mass” tactics to reach swing and independent voters?

ANSWER:

GREAT question! The short answer is “no”, it will not eliminate mass media. However, mass/traditional media will become digitally enabled in the next decade and these best practices will be implemented within TV. Dynamic targeting will be tested this year on Dish and DirecTV such that different users will see different ads even if they’re on the same system, live next door to each other, and are watching the same program. Much of print is moving to tablets where the same thing is possible. As this proliferates we’ll see the practices used online become standard across the board.

“33% of CMOs still analyze their results in spreadsheets”

QUESTION:

How does political advertising online differ in this Presidential election? Does online advertising outweigh TV advertising in this election cycle?

ANSWER:

Online doesn’t outweigh TV in this election cycle at all. Politicians still see online is a pure direct response medium to generate email sign ups or donations. Because it’s an “all or nothing” event for them they are fearful to break away to what they believe has proven successful in the past – TV. Online does work for branding, especially combined with other media. This will slowly be seen but probably not be up to realistic levels for another two to three large election cycles.

QUESTION:

Is there a list or resource of guidelines that a political advertiser must follow when advertising online?

ANSWER:

There currently is not. Each site has its own guidelines so it’s important to find out the ad specs for each site and then build the ads to the lowest common denominator.
